Patriots Tonight

Tonight the New England Patriots will be watched by everyone in the world, as they trounce the colts. This is an easy one. Probably 21 points or better.

Thursday, October 30, 2008

No more world serious this year

Unfortunately, nobody watched the world serious because the umpires cheated so much in the ALCS that the Boston Red Sox didn't win 4-0, as they would have without the cheating. Next year, we'll win it again, making (essentially) three years in a row, since I am officially counting this year as another World Championship for the Boston Red Sox.

Time for the Red Sox

Okay, I am now going to make a Red Sox post. Time for a win tonight. I had on an unlucky shirt last night, so it was my fault.

A paucity of posts perhaps is portending peril, but what the heck. It is good for linking.

Boat Ride Yesterday

We all went out on boats yesterday to watch the scattering of Bill Morris's ashes in the Reef Bay area. Pretty rough, and I was in a 13 foot boston whaler with Larry Boxerman and Robin Swank. Anne Marie did the ceremony. 4 boats, about 25-30 people in total. Today there is a potluck celebration at Hawksnest.

Big rain last night

We had a lot of rain last night on St. John. Thunder, lightning, and a power outage. Fortunately, about a minute before the power went out, I told the Big M to get a candle going. She did, the power went out, and we were able to see.

Here's a joke for you

A sandwich walked into a bar.

He said, "I'd like a beer, please."

The bartender said, "Sorry, we don't serve food here."

There is stuff all over the bed

I emptied out a closet yesterday and put everything on the bed. The bed is totally full of potrzebie. Covered with it. The rule of closets is -- no matter how big or small, they will end up 100% full of potrzebie. I bet if I do a search on potrzebie in a month or two, this post will surface.

Celtics Won Again Ho Hum

The Boston Celtics won again last night, and I saw the game on my little teevee. I was flipping back and forth with Top Chef Chicago, since it was a new show, cutting the chefs down to 4, for the finals in Puerto Rico. Unfortunately Lisa the Bitch nosed out Spike the Dick for the last spot in the finals, joining favorites Richard, Stephanie and what's-her-name. No mention of www.frankbayvillas during the game, so I am not planning on having any of the announcers over in the near future. The Celtics, are invited, of course.

My little fish pond

Here in the woods, at 600 feet above coral bay, I have a little fish pond, but I put some kind of clarifier in it to get rid of algae, and several fish died. I fed them to the geckos. They should rent villas instead of swimming in ponds. Just goes to show -- a fish in a pond is worth two in the villa.

This one needs a post today

I am not going to mention anything today in this blog, except the Boston Red Sox won their 7th straight game. Easily in first place. They are the best team in the world.

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

I can't figure this out at all.

I am just trying to make all the blogs equal in posts. Somehow a post goes into the first blog and makes them unequal. So when this happens, it messes everything up. Oh well, at least on St. John USVI this morning it is very sunny and warm, and I am in shorts and a polo shirt and no shoes as usual.

Friday, May 16, 2008

I don't get it.

These blogs all should have the same number of posts. But this morning, blogs 1,3,4 had fewer posts than blog 2. So, therefore, I am not going to post anything significant in them. Just catching up.

Celtics will win easily tonight

The Boston Celtics, who all use www.stjohntravelforum.com to find information about st john usvi, especially villa rentals, will win easily tonight, unless the referees all cheat, just like the umpires did yesterday in Minnesota, preventing the Boston Red Sox from winning again.

60th post -- this one about Sahara Dust

Today we celebrate the Celtics and Red Sox, who both won last night. They will all be invited to www.stjohnvillarental.com and www.frankbayvillas.com, since they want to rent villas on st john. Incidentally, the skies are a bit cloudy, and now we know why. Sahara dust. See below, from The St. John Source.

Spring-Summer Sahara Haze Hangs Over the Islands
by Source staff
May 8, 2008 -- Officials from the Department of Planning and Natural Resources said late Thursday afternoon they expected the Sahara dust causing hazy skies over the Virgin Islands to continue to affect the area for "another few days."
Dust is kicked up by storms in the desert and rises in the warm air, then travels thousands of miles across the Atlantic basin to the Lesser Antilles, reducing visibility and adversely affecting air quality, according to a statement from DPNR.
The dust can aggravate emphysema, asthma and other lung disorders.
DPNR said although there is no need to boil cistern water at this point, residents should block downspouts to avoid the dust particles and potential contaminants from washing into cisterns. Officials recommended drinking bottled water until they were sure the dust carried no serious impurities.
Brian Seeley, senior forecaster at the National Weather Service office in San Juan, Puerto Rico, said the dust is mainly present in the eastern Caribbean.
Sahara dust storms pass through the region several times a year, but mainly in the spring and summer months. On a more positive note, some meteorologists claim that the airborne particulates inhibit thunderstorm and thus tropical storm development during hurricane season, the statement said.
The current wind direction is from the southeast at 15 to 20 miles per hour.

St. Croix Triathlon

This was in The Source this morning. Maybe it should also be in www.stjohnvillarental.com or www.frankbayvillas.com. But maybe not.

Aussie Alexander Grabs 4th St. Croix Triathlon Title
by James Gardner

Australia's Craig Alexander holds the Ironman banner high as he crosses the finish line first.
May 4, 2008 -- The 20th annual St. Croix Ironman Triathlon had a familiar face crossing the finish line Sunday, as Australia's Craig Alexander took his fourth title in six years.
Greeting his wife, Nerida, and daughter, Lucy, before finishing the race, Alexander proceeded to high-five various spectators, then passed through the legs of a nearby mocko jumbie to pull in with a time of 4:05:34. Already waiting was a herd of reporters and photographers.
"The more you win, the more pressure there is, especially the kind of pressure you put on yourself," Alexander said. "But coming out here, doing it again -- it makes it all the more sweeter. I love this race, and I will be out here again."
The race kicked off Sunday at 6 a.m. with a 1.24-mile swim around Christiansted Harbor. When asked about the first part of the race, Alexander said he was third out of the water -- which made him worried about his competition, especially Marino Vanhoenacker of Belgium, who finished the triathlon about three-and-a-half minutes later with an overall time of 4:08:41.
"He's so good, and was in top form today," Alexander said. "But I was able to switch out of the swim and get some good time in on the run -- I felt I was the best runner out there, and that helped push me through to the end."
Through the first event, the swim, Alexander was ahead of Vanhoenacker by nearly two minutes. Next the competitors began a demanding 56-mile bike ride that included sharp turns, twisting roadways and the legendary "Beast," a 600-foot climb with a 14 to 18 percent grade.
Vanhoenacker took the lead on the bike path, doing the ride in 2:19:09 while Alexander completed the second section in 2:23:36. Finally, on the 13.1-mile foot course, Alexander showed why he calls the St. Croix event "his favorite race," as he put on his running shoes and put away the competition with a time of 1:15:58. Vanhoenacker finished the run in 1:21:40.
"Last week I was in Portugal, running the race," Vanhoenacker said. "I think this was a much stronger race -- I didn't know what to expect. But I had fun out there, even though it hurt a little."
Australia's Richie Cunningham came in third, with an overall time of 4:10:02.
Other results, such as women's category winners and this year's sprint winners, were not available as of press time.
The sidelines in downtown Christiansted were packed with spectators Sunday, including Sen. Terrence "Positive" Nelson.
"This event, as it relates to triathlons, has become a staple event for St. Croix -- people look forward to it every year," Nelson said. "It gives us a real economic boost, and for the participants, I think they really enjoy coming here and enjoying the hospitality of the people."
Participating for the first time in the sprint competition -- a shortened version of the Ironman course -- was St. Croix native Madeline Cruz, who said she had "always wanted" to take part in the annual event.
"I swam about three days last week in preparation," she said. "Hopefully next year I'll be better prepared."
For 15-year-old Will Perl, Sunday's event was the culmination of weeks of training. A Country Day School student, Perl took third place in the sprint competition.
"I usually bike about two to three times a week, about 26 miles," he said. "I'm also on the Dolphins swim team, so I get to practice that twice a week. This is my first year doing the sprint, but I've taken part in about five other triathlons before. It was a great race -- I'm glad I did it."
As an affiliate of the Ironman World Championships, the St. Croix Ironman 70.3 Triathlon offers participating amateur or "age-group" athletes a chance to fill 28 qualifying slots in the Hawaii Ironman, as well as 50 Ironman 70.3 World Championship spots. About 900 competitors participated this year, according to event organizer Tom Guthrie. Sunday's event also brings a purse of $50,000.

Celtics won last night

The Boston Celtics won last night by 25 points. They are a sure bet to win the World Championships, equalling the Red Sox and Patriots. The Bruins, incidentally, made the playoffs, losing 4 games to 3 to Montreal, only because the referees were cheating the whole time. The Revolution made it to the finals again, but were cheated by the referees, just like the Bruins were.

Yacht Club Board Meeting

Maybe the st john yacht club in the virgin islands will have a board meeting next week to discuss sailing issues. Maybe not. At least we have a website www.stjohnyachtclub.org. This has a lot of info about races in the virgin islands. And social activities. Even a section about st john, so you better look at it.

Well, well, well

Fifty posts for everyone today. That's a good statistic, worthy of mention here and in www.stjohntravelforum.com, which has villas on st john for vacation rentals. But why stop at fifty? Might as well make 100 as a goal, and then continue much further. Have to figure out where to get good text, since it is hard and slow to type. But if this was about Minnesota, then it would include references to lakes.

Patriots Draft Picks

Three linebackers, two cornerbacks, one quarterback, one kick returner/safety. This is undoubtedly the best draft of any team in the nfl. Looks like 19-0 again next year, and the lads will all be invited to st john.

Sunday, April 27, 2008

Patriots Second Pick

The Patriots picked someone named Wheatley with their second pick. A wicked good cornerback who is wicked fast. He'll undoubtedly get some playing time. Might end up starting -- who knows. Hard to predict these guys. At least he should develop.

I guess it is time for the Yacht Club

The St. John Yacht Club made it into the search engines, but just briefly. Yahoo for a day or two, and then google at 25 or so and then 5 and then 15 so who knows where it will be today. I bet that it is somewhere. www.stjohnyachtclub.org. And maybe it will be listed with caribbean yacht clubs or st john yacht club, or even sail boat races.

St John USVI

St John in the USVI has loads of vacation villas. Therefore, it needs websites that list them for rentals. Like www.stjohntravelforum.com, for example. Villas on st john are for your vacation.

The st john travel forum can be found at www.stjohntravelforum.com, and it is absolutely full of villas that can be rented, including Caribsurf, Bougainvillea, Kismet, and In Harmony Retreat, just to name a few. Celtics are going to win again

Actually, the Celtics don't even play tonight. They play tomorrow night. So therefore, this is not really a worthwhile comment. It was the Bruins who played last night, and they lost 5-0. The Red Sox won yesterday 8-3, 5th straight win. Looking awesome, they improved to 14-7, which projects to 108-54 for the full season. We'll accept that, although the Red Sox will be favored in every game this season.

Mark Wallace story from today's "Source"

Island Expressions: Mark Wallace
by Lynda Lohr

Mark Wallace
April 20, 2008 -- By day, Mark Wallace helps build houses for Innovative Builders. But when the sun sets you'll find this St. John guitarist and singer in front of the microphone at a number of St. John bistros.
"I'm completely fascinated with the guitar," he said.
Wallace just came out with his first CD, "Cornerstone." It features a wide array of music, including jazz, swing, Irish jigs and Scottish lullabies.
Wallace, 54, loves to sing James Taylor songs and loves Frank Sinatra as well, "anything," he said, "that really catches my ear."
He cites Chet Atkins and Earl Klugh as the guitarists he most admires.
Wallace said he learned to play guitar in the fourth or fifth grade when his older brother started playing.
"I just picked it up," he said And he still plays with his brother when the two get together.
Born in Detroit, Wallace left teaching there to move to St. John in 1984 just as Tropical Storm Klaus was about to hit. The storm's arrival came after days and days of gray cloudy weather.
"It rained for two weeks," he said.
He moved at the suggestion of a student whose brother worked at Maho Bay Camps. "I had never heard of the Virgin Islands, so I just came," he said.
He soon settled in to life on St. John, but continued to study and play guitar.
He's now a family man, with wife Brenda and two sons, Kade, 7, and Landis, 8. Wallace said he recently bought a couple of acres of land in Fish Bay, which he cleared to make a football field next to his house so he can play with his boys.
Working full time during the day with Innovative Builders, playing music several nights and week and spending time with his family doesn't leave much free time. He said he and his wife are able to keep things on an even keel because St. John is small. For example, when he has to play music, he can drop the kids off to stay with his wife at her Mongoose Junction job.
"But in my spare time I practice guitar," he said, getting back to what's closest to his heart.
Catch Wallace from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays at Ocean Grill in Mongoose Junction shopping center; from 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesdays at Gecko Gazebo's open mike in Mongoose Junction; from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays at Morgan's Mango restaurant in Cruz Bay; and from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays at Aqua Bistro at Cocoloba shopping center in Coral Bay.

Bruins win

The Boston Bruins won yesterday 5-1 over montreal, getting to 2-3 in the series and bringing the series back to Boston for game 6. Why this has anything at all to do with www.frankbayvillas.com and villa rentals on st john usvi is beyond me. I don't even know any of the Bruins players any more. I used to know them all when I lived in Boston and they were the greatest. Esposito Cashman Hodge, Stanfield Bucyk McKenzie, Sanderson Walton Westfall, Orr Smith, Johnson and someone, Cheevers Johnston. That was it. I could remember the defenseman if I really tried.

The 37th post -- From The Source Today About Rain

This is from The Source today -- an article about the rain we had on St John, causing everyone to not use www.stjohnvillarental.com or even www.frankbayvillas.com. Instead, people went to Mongoose Junction and went shopping.

Rain Fills Cisterns, Forces Cancellations
by Lynda Lohr

National Weather Service radar showed heavy cloud coverage Monday evening. April 14, 2008 -- A disturbed area of weather over the Virgin Islands brought clouds and rain Monday, causing Seaborne Airlines to cancel flights and forcing the postponement of a Senate committee meeting. The weather should start to clear by Tuesday morning, but until then residents will see more rain, clouds and possibly thunderstorms, said Brian Sealey, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in San Juan. "There will be a tail of lingering moisture into tomorrow," he said. At Weather Station Zephyr, overlooking Coral Bay at Ajax Peak, 0.32 inches of rain fell between midnight and noon Monday. It more than doubled the amount of rain for the entire month of April. It seemed to be "raining a tad" on St. Thomas around 1:30 p.m., observed Steve Parris, acting director of the V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency. With the lack of precipitation recently, the rainy weather is welcome, he said. Cisterns are filling and the landscape is sure to green up. "I'm sure everyone's blessing the fact that it's raining," Parris said. "This is definitely needed." Parris said he had no reports of any problems on St. Thomas due to the rain. Jacqueline Heyliger, deputy director at VITEMA on St. Croix, also reported no problems on her island. It rained in the morning there, but when contacted around 1:30 p.m. she said it had stopped. While residents might be happy about the rain, visitors probably weren't so pleased. There isn't much for visitors to do in V.I. National Park when it rains, so they flock to the Visitors' Center, said Paul Thomas, chief of interpretation at the park on St. John. "They ask, 'When is it going to stop raining?'" he said. The rainy weather did cause one cancellation: The Legislature's Education, Culture and Youth Committee called off its 10 a.m. meeting at Earle B. Ottley Legislative Chambers on St. Thomas because senators couldn't fly from St. Croix to make up a quorum. The meeting was rescheduled for June 4 at the same location, according to Hectito Francis of the Legislature's Media Services. Senators couldn't get from St. Thomas to St. Croix because Seaborne Airlines had to cancel some of its flights. When conditions opened up on St. Thomas they closed on St. Croix and vice-versa, said Chief Executive Officer Omer ErSelcuk. "It's a big chess game," he said. Low clouds and rain created poor visibility, ErSelcuk said. Customers can rebook for flights Tuesday.

What Next?

The Bruins won last night, clinching a playoff berth. But the Red Sox got cheated by blatant bad umpiring. What can we do about them? They are only 3-2 this year. 1-1 in Japan, 2-0 in California, and 0-1 in Canada. They should rent a villa from www.stjohnvillarental.com, I believe, for their next trip to St. John, USVI vacation villas. If not, they will get something nowhere near as good.

A nice bay to visit on St. John

Frank Bay would be my choice to visit at sunset, since it faces due west. And you can see a sunset in www.frankbayvillas.com, taken from a deck. One of the Frank Bay Villa guests took the photo, in fact. A place to rent a St. John villa.

Iguana article from St. John Source

Leapin' Lizards! Some See Boom in Iguana Populationby Lynda Lohr

An iguana at the Westin Resort and Villas. March 25, 2008 -- Rafe Boulon, who heads V.I. National Park's Resource Management Division, has seen a marked increase in the number of iguanas on St. John. "They're all over the place," he said. Boulon used to see them only in places like Chocolate Hole and Great Cruz Bay, but now he sees the big lizards at such unlikely places as the driveway at Trunk Bay. And they've been spotted crossing Centerline Road near Grunwald. Renata Platenberg, a biologist with the Fish and Wildlife Division of the Planning and Natural Resources Department, located on St. Thomas, isn't sure about the iguana situation on St. John, but said it's possible the numbers are rising. On St. Thomas, she said, they're everywhere. "I see them smooshed on the roads," she said. Females carrying eggs head for the roads because they're looking for a warm spot to heat up, Platenberg said. Frequent rainfalls during the winter increased the amount of foliage available for iguanas to eat, Boulon said. They're found in large numbers at the Westin Resort and Villas on St. John because of the lush landscaping at the resort, he said. Iguanas can move right into plant nurseries, Boulon said. Tourists often feed iguanas at St. Thomas restaurants and resorts, Platenberg said. Once the iguanas figured this out, they became permanent residents. "They like French fries," she said. Boulon also noted that a virus about 10 years ago reduced the mongoose population, which may have cut down on the number of predators attacking the baby iguanas. It's rare to see an iguana on St. Croix, said Planning spokesman Jamal Nielsen. Fewer Crucian sightings could mean they're not as welcome at St. Croix resorts as they are on St. Thomas and St. John, or that the island has more land for habitat, making them harder to spot, Platenberg said. Development on St. John could be pushing iguanas out of more remote areas so they're more easily visible, she acknowledged. "That's a good theory," Platenberg said. Iguanas are native to Central and South America, but no one knows when they arrived. "It's likely they were brought in as a food source, possibly by Amerindians," Platenberg said. "Or they might be more recent." In Puerto Rico, iguanas arrived about 50 years ago as pets, she said. While they're not dangerous, they will bite if provoked, she said. And iguanas can cause problems with walls. They dig under walls, Platenberg said, causing them to collapse.

The Maltese Cross is identified as the symbol of an order of Crustian warriors known as the Knights Hospitaller, or Knights of Malta. It was originally the symbol of Amalfi, a small Italian republic of the 11th century. The cross is eight-pointed and has the form of four "V"-shaped arms joined together at their bases, so that each arm has two points. Its design is based on crosses used since the First Crusade. The eight points are said to symbolize the chivalric virtues:
Loyalty
Piety
Frankness
Bravery
Glory and honour
Contempt of death
Helpfulness towards the poor and the sick
Respect for the church

Trip Advisor and Travel Forum

All About The St. John Travel Forum
The St. John Travel Forum was founded August 20, 2007, by a small group of people who know and love St. John, and who wish to share their knowledge with everyone. It is intended to be the internet's most complete collection of information about St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands.
Inside you will find numerous articles about St. John. Topics include where to shop, water sports, boat charters, our beautiful beaches, the Virgin Islands National Park, weddings (officiants, jewelry, florists, even cakes), webcams, restaurants, activities, where to find just about anything.
You can get the ferry schedule, read a trip report, or see a photo gallery.
If you need to find churches, ATMs, books, newspapers, or the weather report, you can locate the information in the St. John USVI Travel Forum.
You can enter the 8 Tuff Miles Road Race from here. Or look at a live webcam of Foxy's Restaurant on Jost Van Dyke.
The restaurant section that we compiled is the most complete of any we have found on the Internet. Listed by location and price, with phone numbers and links to websites when available. We even list the places to get pizza. And as the Travel Forum gets more and more people registered and doing posts, you will have multiple restaurant reviews available at your fingertips.
The same is true of villa rentals. We are planning to have a complete list of available rental villas, organized by size and location. Cottages, small rental villas, large rental villas, Eco-tents, even Caneel and the Westin hotels. Multiple photos of each property, full descriptions, prices, and links to the availability calendars. You will be able to find the perfect villa for your next trip, and send an inquiry right from the Travel Forum. And there will be an ever-growing number of reviews, located in the same section as the villa descriptions, so you won't have to hunt all over internet for information.
Anyone can read any article at any time. No need to Register or Log In. Just go to the Topic that you are interested in and click on it.
If you want to post something, follow these easy directions. First, click on "Register" (top right of the Home Page). Check the box that says you are at least 13 years old. Then enter User Name, Email Address, Password, and Confirmation Code. There are some optional fields at the bottom of this screen that are informational only. Note: you need to register just once. After you have registered, you can then Log In and use all functions of the Travel Forum.
You can post information, questions, or replies anywhere. Click on a Category (example: Accommodations -- Get Information or Write A Review). Then click on a Forum (example: Large Rental Villas). To Post a Reply to an existing Topic, first click on that Topic to open it, then click on "Post Reply." To create a new Topic, click on "New Topic."
There are many different categories. Please try to find an appropriate place for any postings. If you are doing a restaurant review, for example, see if there already is a topic created for that restaurant. If so, then click on the topic to open it, and select "Post Reply." Otherwise, click on "New Topic."
If you have any difficulties with anything, send an email to stjohntravelinfo@aol.com. If you think something should be included that is not here, please send us an email. We will get back to you as soon as possible, hopefully within 1-2 business days.
The St. John Travel Forum is for people who have traveled to St. John, or who are planning a future trip. We hope that you will enjoy using it as much as we have enjoyed creating it. This is truly a beautiful little island, and we want you to come visit. Whether you come here once or many times, we know you will enjoy your experience, and we hope that the St. John Travel Forum will supply you with all the information you need.
If you own a St. John business that is tourism-related, and would like to be listed on the St. John Travel Forum, send an email to stjohntravelinfo@aol.com.
Any posts which have content that the Forum Administration judges to be offensive, overly critical, or inappropriate in any way will be removed.
Our Webmaster is the world-famous Ultmast, who loves St. John, but is now in Costa Mesa, California, running the internet business of a multi-million dollar enterprise. In his spare time, he plays soccer and is on the United States Masters Ultimate Frisbee Team, going to the World Championships this coming December. Naturally, he is a Red Sox and Patriots fan, like his younger brother and father.
The website is professionally optimized, and just 45 days into its existence made the first page of almost all search engine results.
The Forum Administrator was hired on August 27, 2007, a 7-year St. John resident. Another Red Sox and Patriots fan. He lives in Upper Carolina, 600 feet above Coral Bay Harbor, and can look at the warm Caribbean any time all day from his little "office" in the woods. His beautiful wife gives him all the inspiration he needs.

Some History

St John Villa Rental USVI Pool Wedding Honeymoon Frank Bay
Frank Bay Villas -- Nature a Sure Lure for Visitors to St. John
This text is also in St. John Villa Rental. If the characteristic personality of each United States Virgin Island could be captured in a word, the flurry of activity, premier resorts and world-class shopping districts of St. Thomas would likely bring "energetic" to mind. Considering its rolling green hills dotted with centuries-old sugar mill ruins and the Danish-inspired architecture of its two towns, "historic" aptly describes a more quiet St. Croix. But what word best describes the 11,560 acres of largely undeveloped sparkling beaches, private lagoons, nature trails and lush foliage that both complement these two larger sister islands and complete this beautiful Caribbean trio? It is "serene," and that is the hallmark of the island of St. John.
Just a 45-minute boat ride from St. Thomas' Charlotte Amalie, this smallest of the three U.S. Virgin Islands was once a thriving agricultural society established in the early 1700s by Danish settlers attracted by the island's lucrative prospects of cultivating sugar cane. More than 100 cotton and sugar plantations flourished throughout all three U.S. Virgin Islands during the 18th and 19th centuries, but the emancipation of slaves in 1848 led to the plantations' eventual decline. What remain are the ruins of St. John's now-famous Annaberg Sugar Mill and other smaller plantations.
Once known for its sugar cane and farming industries, St. John today is recognized for its pristine beaches and conservation-minded residents who dedicate themselves to preserving the island's natural and cultural resources. Diminutive in size but not in natural splendor, this 19-square-mile island offers a glimpse of what life is like unfettered by commercial development and the trappings of a more modern lifestyle. Since philanthropist Laurence Rockefeller deeded two-thirds of the island - plus 5,000 offshore acres - to the federal government as national park land more than 40 years ago, St. John has retained a tranquil, unspoiled beauty that leaves visitors vowing to return for a longer stay.
For a vacationer with a mind to escape life's faster pace, there is snorkeling, scuba diving and sailing on St. John's calm, clear waters, and sunning on one lovely beach after the next. More than one-third of the national park land is underwater and home to brilliantly-hued coral reefs, plant life and tropical fish. Some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean is at Trunk Bay, where an underwater trail with submerged markers leads visitors on a fascinating journey amidst the island's colorful marine life.
Coming ashore to soak in what St. John most abundantly affords visitors - peace and quiet in the realm of gorgeous scenery - vacationers have 40 numerous beaches on which to spread their towels for an uninterrupted day in the sun. Beginning at the island's western end, three of St. John's most famous beaches are strung together, fringed with tropical palms and sea grape trees. Hawksnest, Trunk and Cinnamon Bay beaches are likely to be the most crowded of St. John's sunning spots, but only relatively-speaking, considering the privacy and seclusion offered by the island's countless other bays and cays.
Maho and Francis bays and Watelemon Cay are just a few more of the beaches encountered as visitors continue eastward along St. John's gently curving coastline. Powdered with sugary-white sand, the beach at Leinster Bay is a haven for those seeking the solace of a more private, sunny retreat. When not soaking up the sun's rays, vacationers can swim in the bay's shallow waters and snorkel in the company of an occasional turtle and stingray among spectacular, colorful coral.
Vacationers who don't take to the sea for recreation or spend day after day on the beach may instead choose to explore any of the 22 self-guided nature trails managed by the National Park Service. In sharp contrast to its white sand beaches, St. John's woodland trails wind through subtropical vegetation, keeping determined hikers occupied for miles - and hours - at a time. The three-mile Reef Bay Hike, offered by the National Park Service, leads nature enthusiasts past ancient Arawak Indian carvings called petroglyphs.
After touring the island on foot, visitors may also choose to wind their way along the island's scenic but narrow roads in a rented car or jeep, making sure to drive on the left as is the law in the USVI. Or, for those not interested in exploring the island on their own, two-hour safari bus tours, colorfully narrated by guides full of both West Indian folklore and first-hand knowledge of the island, take visitors to key observation points around the island.
After taking any one or all of these numerous forays into St. John's flora and fauna, visitors to the island still should save time to explore Cruz Bay, once a bustling port serving the sugar and rum industries and now home to most of the island's residents. Here, visitors won't find fast-food chains, discos or movie theaters; rather, an eclectic mix of interesting boutiques, art galleries, bars and fine restaurants populate what's considered the island's social and business center. Just north of Cruz Bay, vacationers will find one of the prettiest shopping areas in the Caribbean, Mongoose Junction. Cruz Bay is also home to Wharfside Village, another shopping area in town located right on the beach. Both Mongoose Junction and Wharfside Village offer everything from funky local crafts and fashions to elegant jewels and exotic imports.
Valued by many for the slower pace it affords its visitors, St. John has everything to offer in terms of rest, relaxation and recreation. Whether coming to this tiny island for sunning, snorkeling, or even shopping, vacationers will find ample opportunities to enjoy all three and more on St. John.
