Polishing my table

I wish I knew more about putting a super hard finish on my dining room table. Right now it is sanded to 600 grit. The plan is to sand it to 1200 grit, as soon as some sandpaper arrives in the mail. But what then? I want to put a finish on it so it can't get glass rings. Right now it has a glass ring. Hopefully it will buff out.
